Molecular Cloning (in-person!)

Students will engage in theoretical and hands-on experiences addressing core practices in biotechnology. In particular, students will gain proficiency in terms of Students will demonstrate proficiency in the use of PCR technology. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of how molecular cloning is used in synthetic biology and will gain novice proficiency in molecular cloning techniques (as defined by the NIH competencies proficiency scale).

1st week: Students will demonstrate proficiency in the use of PCR technology.

2nd week: Students will demonstrate an understanding of how molecular cloning is used in synthetic biology and will gain novice proficiency in molecular cloning techniques (as defined by the NIH competencies proficiency scale).

Prerequisites: successful completion of 100- and 200- level Biology courses; additionally, for Molecular Cloning I is required for Molecular cloning II

Ideal student: 

  • STEM-Biology students, rising junior or senior.
  • Students who are looking to bring a relevant skill into academic or industry research experiences
  • Students should have a basic understanding of the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids 
  • Students who have a basic knowledge of adjustable volume pipettes
