Dr. Michelle Nearon,
Senior Associate Dean & Director of Office for Graduate Student Development and Diversity at the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
One of the most important things that helped me during my career is always keeping an open mind and being attentive to opportunities as they are presented.
With regards to what has led me to pursue a career in STEM, I always had an interest in math and science in general. Over time my interests turned toward working with students to provide access to high education, specifically, STEM fields.
Advice I would give to young STEM students is to never give up on your dreams and aspirations and know that they may be fulfilled in more than one way.
I was able to overcome some of the biggest challenges in my career because I had a very supportive circle of family, friends, and mentors who reminded me never to doubt my abilities.
My guiding principle would be “Defeat will never catch up to me, as long as I have the determination to succeed.”
